Regulated Care vs. Non Regulated Private Care
We’re often asked: what’s the difference between using the services of a professional regulated care company vs. hiring a private personal assistant?
Choosing between a regulated care company and hiring a personal assistant is a big decision. Understanding the key differences can help you find the best fit for your needs. To make things easier, we’ve outlined some key points below—so you can make an informed choice with confidence!

Accountability Through Oversight
-
Regulated care providers are monitored by bodies like the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and often work with Local Authorities, unlike self-employed carers.
-
The CQC oversees health and care services in England and Wales, such as hospitals, home care services, supported living services, care homes, GP and dental practices and more. ensuring compliance with UK laws and standards through regular inspections.
-
Regulated providers offer accountability and consistent quality, while private care arrangements, like self-employed carers, lack external oversight, leading to potential risks and varying care quality.
Insurance
-
As a regulated care provider we must have the correct employers and public liability insurance policies in place giving you peace of mind if something goes wrong.
-
Hiring a private carer directly can leave you without legal protection if disputes or incidents occur in your home.
Thorough Vetting
-
We strictly follow the Health and Social Care Act and other regulations to deliver the highest standards of care.
-
Our team undergoes thorough vetting, including criminal record checks, references, identity, right-to-work, and qualification verification.
-
Rigorous screening and interviews help us hire the best, minimising risks and building a trustworthy team.
-
Private care arrangements often lack this level of thoroughness.
Employment & Training
-
As a regulated care provider, we handle all aspects of employment—recruitment, HR, holidays, contracts, payroll, taxes, and insurance—saving you time and responsibility. Private care arrangements may leave you responsible for these areas.
-
Our staff receive regular industry-approved training to ensure exceptional care and safeguard your well-being.
-
Managers actively supervise teams to maintain safety, professionalism, and expertise—unlike private care, which often lacks oversight and formal training.
-
Without proper training and management, private assistants risk errors in care, mishandling medication, or misusing equipment, potentially leading to harm or added costs for training.
Reliability
-
Choosing a regulated provider like NuvoCare ensures expert care from a skilled and flexible team, ready to adapt as your needs grow.
-
We can quickly arrange additional support, such as extra care workers, ensuring seamless service.
-
Reliable schedules managed by qualified staff ensure uninterrupted care, even during staff absences.
-
Private carer arrangements can lack reliability, with gaps in care due to time off or unforeseen issues.
-
Single assistants may face fatigue from long hours and struggle to scale care as needs increase.
-
With NuvoCare, your evolving care needs are met without disruption, staying with one trusted provider.
Fully-Managed Professional Services
-
Relax knowing your service is fully managed, available 7 days a week, all year round. A manager is always just a phone call away to assist with your needs.
-
Choosing a regulated care company means structured care from highly trained professionals, held to strict standards. Ongoing training equips staff to handle complex care needs with confidence, ensuring consistent, reliable support.
-
Unlike private care with personal assistants, regulated companies can scale resources to meet changing needs seamlessly.
-
NuvoCare maintains high standards through a professional code of conduct, regular assessments, quality checks, and management oversight, addressing any issues swiftly.
-
Non-regulated care lacks standardised protocols, leading to inconsistent care. Personal assistants may not have the training or resources to provide specialised care or adapt to changing requirements effectively.
-
Relying on a single assistant risks dependency, leaving you vulnerable if they leave their role.
-
Regulated care companies comply with ICO data protection standards, safeguarding your privacy. Private assistants may lack oversight, increasing the risk of data breaches.
Ultimately, your decision depends on the level of personalisation, accountability, and flexibility you require. Whether you value relying on one personal assistant or the professional reliability and personalised care of a regulated care company, the right choice will prioritise your well-being and peace of mind.
Pricing Made Simple.
Arranging Home Care for yourself can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! We're here to keep things simple and straightforward when it comes to costs, giving you one less thing to worry about!
Our hourly or weekly rates are based on the type of service you need. Our rates are incredibly competitive, you won't find any hidden fees or lengthy notice periods—just complete transparency. We can also accept top-ups to any direct payments you might receive from your council.
Our visit times start from 30 minutes, but we may recommend a minimum of 1 hour to ensure you get the comprehensive care you need and deserve within that time.
Get Help With Care Costs.

Worried about the cost of care? Depending on your situation, funding options may be available. Your local council could help cover some or all of your care expenses, ensuring you get the support you need without the financial burden.
Your contribution depends on your income and savings. To check if you qualify for assistance, request a FREE assessment from your local council. This will determine your eligibility for help with care costs. For an estimate, try the council's FREE online calculator by clicking here.
Explore Other Options.
If your health or disability affects your activities of daily living, you can explore local council funding for care costs but you might also qualify for benefits such as Attendance Allowance which can be up to £108.55 per week* (*price correct May 2024).
This tax-free, non-means tested benefit doesn't look at your income or savings, and you don't need to have paid National Insurance to qualify. You can use the money however it suits you best to live independently and meet your needs due to your disability or health issues.
At NuvoCare, we can help you apply for attendance allowance if you qualify. We offer a free, no-obligation 30-minute confidential consultation to assess if we can assist you and for you to decide if you want our help. If you meet the criteria, we'll simplify the process, explain everything clearly, and handle all the paperwork for you.
If your initial claim is rejected, we can request a reconsideration and, if needed, take the claim to appeal. Find out more below.
